WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY SYMPOSIUM AND HEALTH FAIR
The Government of Sierra Leone Ministry of Health in partnership with WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control has taken action of check the burden to tobacco related disease affecting Sierra Leoneans through prevention of cigarette smoking and other uses of tobacco. Strategies include educating the public to the dangerous consequences of tobacco use, legislation to prevent smoking in public places, taxation on tobacco sales in Sierra Leone. MMMThe newly formed layman organization, Medical Missionary Movement Sierra Leone Chapter is represented on the Tobacco Control Task Force and is partnering with the TCTF in the upcoming World No Tobacco Day 31 May 2018. Our participation included the organizing and conducting of Health Fair Booths using a variation of the H.E.R. NEWSTART Seminar. We will have information tables on lifestyle Habits, Benefits of Water, Measurement of Lung Capacity, BMI measurement as indication of cardiovascular health, Blood Pressure Monitor, Dangers of Cigarette Smoking among other items. |
Stop Smoking You Tube videos greeted participants at the Symposium/Health Fair. It was a wonderful opportunity of the Sierra Leone community attending the Fair and Symposium to be made aware of the contribution of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Sierra Leone to Health Education and the relief of suffering.
The Medical Missionary Trainees worked along side Medical Students from the School of Medicine is conducting screening. Individuals attending the health fair were motivated to make positive lifestyle changes. Comments were heard were "I am so happy for knowing my BMI and my need to reduce body fat"... "I am going to stop smoking!" ... congratulations again for everything today. The health fair was really so impressive! |
